Restaurant POS Systems

POS Computer System

A computer system to run a POS (point of sale) system is basically the same type of computer you probably already have at your home or office. There are several components that will certainly make a POS computer system function better and you are most likely familiar with all of them now.

The biggest difference is not in the hardware but in the software. There are a number of companies that manufacturer software specifically designed for certain types of businesses. Of course the most popular are:
Restaurant POS Systems
Retail POS Systems

These systems can vary from a single station computer and cash register combination to multiple stations with hardwire or wireless communications between them.

If you are considering a bundled POS computer system be sure to make sure it has the components you are looking for in order to run your business more efficiently.

Retail POS systems will come with things like bar code scanners, cash drawers and or cash registers.

A restaurant POS system will most likely have touch screen monitors, one cash drawer systems and credit card processing.

Many times you can 'build your own' system by selecting the components you really need. Many of the bundled systems will have one or two things you will have no need for. That is not so bad if the price is good. In some cases you can take the bundled price and then sell the items you do not need online and even further reduce your system cost.

Since all POS computer systems use, well, computers the same advice goes when it comes to the heart of the system. The faster the processor the better. The larger the hard drive the better. External as well as online backup of your data is a must. The low end equipment may not be the best choice even though it's cheaper. Employees can be pretty tough on a POS system so in most cases it's cheaper in the long run to buy quality up front. Replacing single components can be pretty expensive.

The basic components you will be choosing from are:
POS computer software - there are programs written to handle just about any type of business out there. Most programs will allow you to 'program' or 'customize' the software to meet your specific requirements. Be sure to check on that though. Not all systems may give you the versatility you need.

Cash Drawer - functions like a cash register but is connected to the POS system for record keeping and auditing purposes.

Receipt printer - these come in different types and styles. Small to large and thermal, impact or inkjet. Keep in mind that you cant use a thermal printer in a really hot environment like a commercial kitchen and if you put the printer in direct sunlight the paper will turn black and be useless.

Credit Card Reader - in todays business you can't function without one of these. You may need more than one.

Monitors - basic or touch screen. Most restaurants and bar POS systems use touch screen monitors. Most retail systems do not use touch screen monitors.

With a little homework, you should be able to find the perfect POS computer system to fit your needs. Take your time in the beginning and your will most likely make a much better decision on the system.
